Don’t Expect Much Out Of Ganassi/Penske Camps In Sunday’s Coca-Cola 600

It’s Memorial Day weekend. This year, this weekend will look vastly different than the ones in the past. Normally, this weekend is full of racing and cookouts. This year, two of the three Memorial Day weekend races have been either postponed (Indy 500) or canceled (Monaco). Also, it’s going to be hard to having weekend parties while also having to social distance due to the coronavirus.

But, one race is still going — the Coke 600 at the Charlotte Motor Speedway, albeit this one will still look different. There’s no practice, just one round of qualifying hours before the race and no fans in attendance.

Still, it’s the ‘600 and the top teams want to win it. When thinking of the top teams of this weekend, you can’t ignore Team Penske nor Chip Ganassi Racing.

Penske has won the Indianapolis 500 a record setting 18 times. Chip Ganassi Racing has done so four times themselves. Combined, that’s 22 trips to victory lane during Memorial Day weekend in Indianapolis. What about Charlotte?

They have one combined victory. That came in 2010 with Penske’s Coca-Cola 600 triumph with Kurt Busch.

For whatever reason, neither Penske nor Ganassi have had much success in the Charlotte leg of the Memorial Day weekend races. It may not change this year either.

Joey Logano may have finished runner-up in this race a year ago, but that’s also his only top five over his last six Charlotte oval starts. Actually, four of his last five Charlotte oval starts have resulted in a finish of 21st or worse.

His teammate Brad Keselowski was fourth in 2018 but has three of his last four finishes being 39th, 15th and 19th respectively too.

That leaves Ryan Blaney. He has no top five finishes in eight career Charlotte oval starts and was 13th or worse in seven of those eight tries.

Ganassi, has Matt Kenseth who’s still getting up to speed after not racing at all in NASCAR since 2018. Can he realistically win in his third race start back?

Kurt Busch has one top five in his last 11 Charlotte starts a fifth in the Fall of 2015.

While 2020 has been a weird year, I don’t know if these past numbers equate out to a Penske or Ganassi win on Sunday.
