Larson Issues An Apology, Sponsors, NASCAR, Ganassi And Even iRacing Make Statements Too

INDIANAPOLIS — We all knew when we heard the slur on Sunday night, that Kyle Larson was going to be in some hot water. Larson, dropped an n bomb during an online racing event on Easter night and it didn’t look good for him at the moment as well as for his future in racing.

Well, the fallout is already starting. On Monday morning, he was not only suspended indefinitely by his team (Chip Ganassi Racing) but by NASCAR too. Also, Chevrolet, the car maker that he drivers for at Ganassi and the power behind his dirt teams, have suspended any ties with Larson indefinitely as well.

“We are extremely disappointed by what Kyle said last night during an iRacing event,” his team said in a release. “The words that he chose to use are offensive and unacceptable. As of this moment we are suspending Kyle without pay while we work through this situation with all appropriate parties.”

Later, NASCAR issued a similar statement.

“NASCAR has made diversity and inclusion a priority and will not tolerate the type of language used by Kyle Larson during Sunday’s iRacing event,” a statement read. “Our member conduct guidelines are clear in this regard, and we will enforce these guidelines to maintain an inclusive environment for our entire industry and fan base.”

By lunch time, his sponsors and even iRacing have even gotten involved. The online racing platform has suspended Larson indefinitely too.

That preceded what Credit One Bank, one of the main supporters on Larson’s No. 42 Chevrolet said as they back his punishment as well.

Larson, finally made his first comments on the nature just prior to all of that. The six-time winner in NASCAR’s Cup Series feels bad for what he said. He’s not hiding behind it either. He’s admitting what we heard was what he said and basically has to accept any backlash coming his way.

Do I believe Larson is being sincere? Yes. Do I think he’s a bad guy? No. Larson has never shown to be a bad guy as he’s been one of the nicest guys in the garage for no matter what series he’s competing in. But, he made a huge mistake, one that he may never be able to recover from.

That word is unacceptable to use no matter what skin color you have. It’s an insulting word that should be banished from all vocabulary for any language. There’s no place for it. I do believe Larson fully understands this now, but it’s unfortunate that it took this magnitude for it to sink in.

The odds of him racing for Chip Ganassi Racing in the near future was already bleak due to the Coronavirus. But, whenever we do get back to racing, the odds of seeing Larson behind the wheel of any of their cars across NASCAR, IndyCar or any other series is slim. Also, Larson is a free agent at season end. Ganassi can cut ties rather quickly and get out of this on their end. But, who’s going to put their organizations on the line by hiring him too?

Larson is a nice guy. He’s a husband and father. He’s a hell of a race car driver and I have no doubt he was put on this Earth to race. But, finding something to race is going to be hard now because of one immature word that he should have never had come into his brain.

That’s the life lessons he’s going to have to learn from moving forward but the fallout is going to be great too.
