Hendrick Motorsports came into the 2020 Daytona Speedweeks on the heels of five straight Daytona 500 poles. It was fairly obvious that they were the favorites once again on Sunday to earn the pole for next Sunday’s Great American Race (2:30 p.m. ET/FOX/MRN).
Despite HMS engines qualifying 1-2-3-4, that pole streak for the organization narrowly comes to an end though
Alex Bowman (194.363 mph) was the top HMS driver, in qualifying his No. 88 Chevrolet second. That’s his third career front row qualifying effort for the ‘500. He led a trio of Hendrick drivers up front with Chase Elliot and Jimmie Johnson (193.886 mph) qualifying third and fourth respectively. Last year’s pole winner William Byron (192.443 mph) was only eighth this year.
But, for Chevrolet though, despite a new design to their Camaro’s, they won another Daytona 500 pole. Since 2013, a bowtie was on the top starting spot for the Daytona 500 every season. This year, it’s Ricky Stenhouse Jr’s turn.
The Mississippi native won his third career Busch Pole Award with turning a lap around the 2.5-mile Florida race track with a speed of 194.582 mph in his No. 47 Chevrolet. It was the ninth straight year the Daytona qualifying speed was over 190 mph and 10th in the last 11 years.
Stenhouse, was let out of his contract with Roush Fenway Racing early and joined JTG Daugherty Racing this past offseason. With his new team, he earns his first Daytona 500 pole.
The top non Chevrolet drivers were Joe Gibbs Racing teammates Denny Hamlin (193.432 mph) and Kyle Busch (192.876 mph) who were fifth and sixth respectively. The top Ford driver was Aric Almirola (7th).
Stenhouse and Bowman aren’t the only two celebrating either. Seven drivers entered Speedweeks with non chartered teams and only four of them would make the show. In qualifying, the top two among those seven would lock themselves in on time. Those two are 2019 Coke Zero Sugar 400 winner Justin Haley (190.02 mph) and Brendan Gaughan (188.94 mph).
They’re the youngest driver (Haley) and oldest (Gaughan) in the field.
