Tony Kanaan currently sits 18th in the NTT IndyCar Series points standings. 2019 has looked a lot like 2018 for the popular Brazilian driver. Last year he had four top 10 finishes with his best races coming on ovals. This year, he has two top 10 finishes, both coming on ovals.
That’s why despite being towards the bottom of the standings, he’s excited for the next two races at Pocono and Gateway. See, Kanaan knows that these are his best shots at victory in his No. 14 Chevrolet.
“It’s extremely encouraging to go to Pocono,” Kanaan said of this weekend’s race. “The next two races are ovals where I think we had decent results. My best two results were on the ovals so I’m extremely confident and excited to go there. It’s a really fast race track, a fun oval to be at and I’m looking forward to it.”
Kanaan, had a top three car in last year’s Indy 500. This year, his team started out the month of May struggling but got his car better and better as the week went on and ended up ninth. In Iowa, he had a fast car but his points standing forced a bad qualifying draw. He’d end up 10th when it was all said and done.
Now, it’s time for another superspeedway followed by another short oval.
Kanaan, has two top 10 finishes in his last three Pocono starts. He’s led at least one lap in all but one year he’s raced there. Then, it’s to Gateway where he finished a respective 13th last year. This is his time to shine.
