Toyota hasn’t won at Michigan since 2015. In fact, Matt Kenseth’s victory in this very race that years in their only one since 2012. But, I still think that they can win Sunday’s Consumers Energy 400 in the Irish Hills.
Heading into this weekend, they’ve won 11 of the 22 races run in 2019. Plus, all four of their drivers are on hot streaks. Even back in June, they finished 3-5-11-31.
Two weeks ago in Pocono, they finished 1-2-3. That was the second time this season that they’ve accomplished that feat. Last weekend in Watkins Glen, they finished 2-3-4. Right in the middle of all of that success has been Denny Hamlin. Following his victory at Pocono, Hamlin vowed that they are a top three team in NASCAR right now. Following a third place finish last weekend, it appears that he’s right.
To go along with his results, Hamlin now has four consecutive top five finishes on the season as well and five top five finishes in his last seven overall starts on the year too.
“Just been better as a whole,” Hamlin said of his recent success. “Just communication getting better, everything is getting better. I’ve got a first-year crew chief (Chris Gabehart) that’s finding his feet right now and our communication is good. He’s showing up to the race track and bringing me a fast car. I’m driving them as hard as I can. It’s all working right now.”
Now, it’s to Michigan, a place where Hamlin was 12th and 11th in his last two June starts and eighth in last year’s August race. With how well he’s running, expect him to keep this stout streak going.
