“They’d have to have their heads examined if they get rid of me. Because nobody will do a better job in my car than myself”

Matt DiBenedetto has had Leavine Family Racing up front a lot lately. Out of the last five Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series races, he has scored three top 10 finishes. Last weekend at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway, he was quick all weekend and capped it all off with a fifth place finish in his No. 95 Toyota.

Now, he’s backed that up with another solid weekend at the Pocono Raceway. DiBenedetto, has been up front in both practice sessions from the Tricky Triangle and will start towards the front as well.

Despite all of this success for a small team, DiBenedetto hasn’t had discussions for a contract extension for next season. He’s heard the same noise we all have. Joe Gibbs Racing has too many drivers for cars for 2020.

Denny Hamlin, Kyle Busch and Martin Truex Jr. are all under contract for next year on the Cup side. Christopher Bell was just recently extended to remain with JGR. Erik Jones doesn’t have a deal done yet, but he keeps saying one will be soon. Jones, is driving as good as anyone right now and is worthy of a third year with the No. 20 Toyota.

But, with a four car cap, that’s five drivers. With LFR having a Toyota and JGR technical alliance now, the rumor is one of those four either Bell or Jones will join them. That would leave DiBenedetto, despite running so well, without a ride.

He spoke out at Pocono.

“I’ve had to fight and claw so hard, now that I’m in a good, quality ride with a great team that I love, I’m just 100-percent focused on performing,” said DiBenedetto. “That’s what we’ve been doing. That’s the awesome part. These top fives, top 10’s, I know that anyone, not to sound arrogant, but they’d have to have their heads examined if they get rid of me. Because nobody will do a better job in my car than myself”

The human nature in me says that he sees what direction this is heading and is speaking out to try to fight for his ride. He’s been through so much in NASCAR and has always prevailed. His talent has far outweighed the cars he’s driven and now that he has a team that is on the rise, he doesn’t want to give that up.
