SHR/JGR Look Like Favorites So Far In Pocono

We had two Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series practice sessions on Saturday at the Pocono Raceway. In both, one thing stood out – SHR/JGR are the favorites.

Joe Gibbs Racing has won four straight races at the Tricky Triangle. Stewart-Haas Racing is coming off of a win last weekend in New Hampshire. Both, looked the part on Saturday.

In the first session, seven of the top nine speeds belonged to these cars. In the second session, SHR struggled a bit on single lap runs where JGR had three of the top nine.

On the 10 lap averages in final practice, they had six of the top 11 times.

So, do you want to be against them for Sunday’s Gander RV 400 (3 p.m. ET/NBCSN/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio)?

Kyle Busch has won two straight races at Pocono and three of the last four. He was ninth and fifth respectively in practice on single lap runs and third on the 10 lap average chart in his No. 18 Toyota.

Denny Hamlin has three top five finishes in his last five starts on the season in his No. 11 Toyota including two straight. He’s won at Pocono four times before and was eighth and ninth respectively on single lap runs in Saturday and second on the 10 lap averages.

Martin Truex Jr. was fourth and 12th respectively on single lap runs and second and 11th on 10 lap averages. He has three top six finishes in his last five Pocono starts.

But, it’s Erik Jones who has to be the favorite. He was seventh and first respectively in practice as well as scoring a third place finish back in June and has two straight third place finishes on the season. Also, Jones has four top eight finishes in five tries at Pocono and has four top eight finishes in his last five starts on the season.

What about SHR?

Kevin Harvick was only 13th in both practice sessions but fourth and sixth on the 10 lap averages. He has five top four finishes in his last six Pocono starts and five fourth place finishes this season.

Clint Bowyer was fifth and 14th respectively in practice and first and eighth on 10 lap averages. He was fifth back in June.

Daniel Suarez has three top seven finishes in his last four starts including a runner-up in this very race last year and eighth in June. He was quickest in the first practice on Saturday morning and 13th in final practice.

Aric Almirola was only third and 19th in practice and only seventh and 25th at Pocono last year and 10th in June.
