NEWTON, IA – Tony Kanan was animated following his 13th place qualifying run on Friday afternoon from the Iowa Speedway. See, he felt like if they had their stuff together this season, he wouldn’t have such a bad qualfiying draw here this weekend. Since he was 19th in the NTT IndyCar Series standings entering the Iowa 300, he’d have to qualify early, in the worst conditions.
That’s the only reason he qualified in Row 7. The speed was there, the draw unfortunately wasn’t.
At the beginning of Saturday night’s rain delayed event, Kanaan quickly fell. In fact, early on, the two AJ Foyt Racing cars would run last and second to last. But, Kanaan and his No. 14 Chevrolet crew kept making adjustment and there he was up front in the end.
Kanaan, would finish 10th on Saturday for his second top 10 of the year and 222nd of his Indy Car career. It was a night that accomplished the goals that they set out for themselves this weekend.
“We came here with a goal to finish in the top 10 and I think it was a good day for us despite a couple mistakes we made during the race,” said Kanaan. “We still managed to finish in the top 10, so good day, good start. Still have a lot of work to do though.”
This was Kanaan’s third top 10 in his last four years here including eight of the last 10 overall. It’s a start that they know that they can build upon.
