Leaving the Texas Motor Speedway back in early June, Ryan Hunter-Reay was feeling good about his hopes for the NTT IndyCar Series championship. He had just finished fifth in the DXC Technology 600 for his third straight top five finish on the year. From COTA (March 24) to Texas (June 7) Hunter-Reay scored seven top eight finishes in eight tries.
Unfortunately, bad luck has struck him again.
Hunter-Reay only finished 11th in the June 23 race in Road America. This past Sunday in Toronto, he finished 16th. That has dropped the American to seventh in the championship standings with six races remaining.
Now, he’s looking to get back on track this weekend at one of his strongest tracks on the schedule – Iowa Speedway.
While Andretti Autosport hasn’t won at Iowa since 2015, you can’t overlook them this weekend. In all four prior years that this race was run under the lights, Andretti Autosport won them all. Hunter-Reay, won three of those four primetime races at Iowa.
This is the first year since 2015 that the race moves back to a night time event.
“I’m excited to return to Iowa, especially now that it is back to a night race,” said Hunter-Reay. “We’ve made three trips to victory lane in the past, and hopefully, we’ll be ending the weekend back in the winner’s circle with the DHL Honda. We’re just over halfway through the season, so we have to turn our luck around and get some strong results.”
Hunter-Reay, has four top two finishes in a four year span between 2012 through 2015 to go along with a third place finish in 2017.
With how this season has gone, Hunter-Reay will be ecstatic to put his No. 28 Honda in victory lane on Saturday night.
