PLYMOUTH, Wis – Now that the final NTT IndyCar Series race before July is behind us, we’re down to just seven races remaining in the 2019 season. With that being said, Silly Season is starting to heat up. See, the only way that Silly Season will crescendo to loud volumes is when the plans are known for Alexander Rossi.
It’s no secret, he’s the top domino in this. He’s a free agent at seasons end and will be coveted by every team in the paddock. So, where will he end up?
I mean, we literally have just seven races left and one of the top drivers in the series doesn’t know. In fact, he doesn’t even care. His only mindset is on winning this year’s championship and if there’s any distractions that get in his way, he just brushes them off – silly season included.
“It’s in God’s hands,” said Rossi after securing his fourth win since last season. It is he said when asked if it really was.
See, Rossi was in the hunt to win last year’s championship. Since the start of the 2017 season, only Josef Newgarden has scored more wins than Rossi.
Right now, only seven points separate the two for this year’s title.
Rossi, is marketable. He can win, scratch that, dominate on any given Sunday. He’s always a threat to win the Indy 500. What more could you want?
Michael Andretti doesn’t think he’ll lose Rossi. The only thing left is to shore up NAPA’s plans and if Honda is going to chip in to keep the talented American driver.
But, what about Team Penske? Prior to the Month of May, it was reported that they had a large interest in Rossi joining their team on the Indy Car side of things. After all, they hired Rossi to run some IMSA races for them. Most considered that an open tryout per say.
But, when Simon Pagenaud went and swept both races at Indy during the Month of May, Roger Penske vowed to sign the free agent Pagenaud to an extension. Penske makes it known that if you win for him, you’ll always have a seat.
Just ask Will Power. He was on the proverbial hot seat with Penske last year but like Pagenaud did in 2019, he swept the Month of May. That netted him a contract extension.
We have reason to believe that Power and Pagenaud will be under contract with Penske for 2020. With how well Newgarden is running, that’s three drivers for three cars. Some say Penske wouldn’t expand to four full time teams again, but for a driver like Rossi available, I say they would.
But, after Rossi just beat the two Penske’s by 28+ seconds on Sunday, why leave Andretti for them?
“I have no considerations,” said Rossi about that.
None whatsoever?
“No.”
But,. it didn’t stop the Penske duo to talk about the prospects of Rossi joining them in 2020. Power, says that Newgarden would love for the two to join forces.
“Yeah, Josef (Newgarden_ really wants him as a teammate,” said Power.
“I think it would be awesome,” said Newgarden chiming in.
Power, said he’s good with whatever so long as he’s not the one being replaced. The fact that they’re talking about it means that it’s being discussed.
