Right now, it appears that as many as three seats may be open at Stewart-Haas Racing for the 2020 Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. Granted, all could have their current drivers remain in those seats for another year, but reality is, there’s an option that Aric Almirola, Clint Bowyer and Daniel Suarez could all not be retained by the organization past this season.
For Suarez, he spoke on his future at the Michigan International Speedway on Friday. Suarez says that he’s confident that he will return for a second season with SHR as he and the team are currently having talks about the two sides joining forces for another year in 2020.
“We are working on things,” said Suarez. “I feel very confident in where we are. I have an option, they have an option, which I feel is the best way to do things, especially when you have a lot of unknowns in the beginning of the year. Right now, we know where we’re at. We know what we can do. We haven’t won races. That was my goal. Nobody has on the team. It’s not like I’ve been the only one not winning races like the last two years (while at Joe Gibbs Racing). It’s a way different situation.
“I feel like I’m in a good home with Stewart-Haas Racing, Ford Performance and everyone in this group, Haas Automation, Arris and Coca-Cola. We’re working on some more. I feel confident about it. But I will tell you, man, I felt confident about it last year and you see what happens. You never know in this sport.”
Suarez, joined the Cup Series in 2017 after winning the XFINITY Series championship a season prior. It was a shock that he moved up so fast but it was because of the unexpected retirement announcement from Carl Edwards. Suarez, only had one month to prepare for a Cup seat. Unfortunately, his results with JGR weren’t good enough to be retained.
They brought in Martin Truex Jr. from the folding Furniture Row Racing to replace Suarez. So, despite only 72 career starts in NASCAR’s premiere series, Suarez was a free agent.
But, not for long.
SHR signed him to replace the departing Kurt Busch as the deal is looking like a good one. Suarez, currently sits inside of the playoff standings in 13th and has looked like a much better driver in 2019 compared to the past.
