Tony Kanaan Hoping For Another Top 10 At Texas

Tony Kanaan knew heading into the 2019 NTT IndyCar Series season that his best shot of winning this year would be on superspeedways. Then, heading into race week for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500, Kanaan didn’t think that they had a race contending race car on superspeedway’s anymore.

On Monday of race week, Kanaan said that his No. 14 Chevrolet didn’t necessarily improve like the others did on these types of tracks in the offseason. By Friday of that week, he was on top of the speed charts and said that the changes that he requested worked.

In the race itself, he got the top 10 that he initially thought he would in bringing his No. 14 Chevrolet home ninth. Now, after last weekend’s doubleheader in Belle Isle, Kanaan is hoping to contend in Saturday night’s DXC Technology 600 (8 p.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network).

In 19 career starts on the 1.5-mile track, Kanaan has scored 15 top 10 finishes. In just his last six starts, he’s finished in the top six in five of them. Out of those five top sixes, four of them are either second or third.

“Texas is a good track for us, it’s one of my higher average finishes of all the tracks (nine podiums in 19 starts),” said Kanaan. “We had a decent car there last year. We didn’t finish the race, but we started sixth. I ran as high as fourth in the race. So I’m really looking forward to it. I really think our speedway car is decent so I’m banking on another good oval result for us.”

With Kanaan not winning a race since the 2014 season finale at Fonana and AJ Foyt Racing not having won since Long Beach in 2013, what a perfect spot for Kanaan and the home state team to end those droughts?

It can happen too.
