INDIANAPOLIS – Kyle Kaiser got into the Turn 3 SAFER barrier around Noon ET on Fast Friday. That was an enormous set back for the Juncos Racing team who were already strapped for cash and had limited spare parts to work with.
See, Juncos lost both of their primary sponsors just 24 hours before the opening day of practice for the 103rd Running of the Indianapolis 500 (11 a.m. ET/NBC/INDYCAR Radio Network). Instead of the familiar green and orange paint scheme, they had to strip the car of any color and made it all white.
It was the ultimate underdog story right?
Ricardo Juncos came to the United States years ago with only $400 dollars in his pocket. Now, he’s down to a one car team with one race left in Indy Car and needing to make the show.
Unfortunately, Kaiser crashed violently, badly damaging his No. 32 Chevrolet.
The team at that point wasn’t sure if they would even get a chance to qualify this weekend. They had one day to get a car ready and the car that they had was completely totaled. The big problem was that they didn’t have a lot of funding to buy spare parts.
They had a spare tub, Kaiser’s car from the road course race at COTA on March 24, but nothing was put together on it.
Luckily, other teams in the NTT IndyCar Series lended a hand to offer some spare parts and hands to put the new car together.
The Juncos Racing team worked all night, literally getting zero sleep said team owner Ricardo Juncos and by 6:15 a.m. ET, the car was rolling through tech.
They’d pass tech and be ready for the 8 a.m. ET practice session this morning. Juncos, said that they did a weeks worth of work in 20 hours.
Now, can they make the field?
With working all night, you could forgive the team if they had made some mistakes. Are all the bolts tightened? Is everything where it belongs? Is the car setup correctly?
The speed was there this week. They looked like a contender to qualify in the top 20. Now, they have a road course car pieced together through the wee hours of Saturday, ready to qualify.
This would be the story of the month if Kaiser can qualify.
