Who’s Hot, Who’s Not Leaving Phoenix

We’re four races into the 36 race Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series season. As of now, the three top teams to me look like Team Penske, Chip Ganassi Racing and Joe Gibbs Racing.

As we close out the west coast swing next Sunday in Fontana, here’s who’s hot and who’s not.

Hot

Kyle Busch

Hes got to be the best driver of the year so far. His win in Phoenix solidified that. Busch, hasn’t finished worse than sixth all year with three top three finishes in four tries.

Martin Truex Jr.

He earned his second runner-up in the last three weeks on Sunday for his third top five finish in his last four starts at Phoenix. He had zero since 2009 prior to that. In fact, since Atlanta, Truex’s worst finish on the year is eighth.

Denny Hamlin

He won the season opening Daytona 500 and now brought his No. 11 Toyota home fifth. He has four top 11 finishes in as many tries in 2019.

Aric Almirola

The SHR driver now has three top eight finishes in the last three weeks. Sunday was his fourth consecutive top 10 finish in Phoenix.

Kurt Busch

He may be the new guy on the block at Ganassi, but Busch is thriving. Busch earned his third straight top seven finish on Sunday and his seventh top 10 finishes in his last 11 Phoenix starts.

Joey Logano

Sunday was Logano’s third top 10 finish in four tries this season. If not for a loose wheel at the end of the race in Atlanta, he’d have three top four finishes with this being his worst result of the year.

Who’s Warm

Kevin Harvick

Yes, he has three top 10 finishes. Yes, two of those are fourth place runs. But, it’s how those races are ending for him. Harvick, starts off strong, but fades as the race goes on. Until they figure that out, they’re just a top 10 team right now.

Ricky Stenhouse Jr.

He’s off to his best start after a 13th place run on Sunday. Stenhouse, now has three top 13 finishes in four starts to the season including a sixth place finish in Vegas.

Ryan Newman

The Roush Fenway Racing camp has been vastly improved in 2019. Newman, like Stenhouse, is a top 13 or 14 contender by the week. He finished 12th on Sunday for his third top 14 finish in four tries.

Who’s Not

William Byron

It’s been a rough start to his sophomore campaign. Byron, has finishes of 21st, 17th, 16th and 24th respectively.

Austin Dillon

They’ve had fast cars but can’t finish. Sunday, he ran out of gas while running in the top five. His finishes are now are 16th, 21st, 20th and 21st respectively.

Daniel Hemric

Like Dillon, he’s had fast cars too. They just can’t capitalize on them. Hemric’s finishes in 2019 are 34th, 20th, 23rd and 18th respectively.

Daniel Suarez

His first season with SHR hasn’t started too well. He’s finished 33rd, 10th, 17th and 23rd. That would be just fine if his teammates were battling for top 10’s.

Darrell Wallace Jr.

His sophomore year isn’t going well either. Wallace, hasn’t been a factor at all with finishes of 38th, 27th, 26th and 22nd respectively. At least, they’re trending in the right direction still.

Ryan Preece

He started off hot at Daytona with an eighth place run, but a crash on pit road while running in the top 10 in Atlanta ruined that momentum. His last three finishes are 35th, 25th and 34th respectively.
