McDowell, Austin Dillon, Very Strong So Far In Atlanta

HAMPTON, GA – We have to expect the unexpected this weekend at the Atlanta Motor Speedway. No one knows what will happen in Sunday’s Folds of Honor QuikTrip 500 (2 p.m. ET/FOX/PRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). See, we have a new racing package with more drag and less horsepower (750 to 550). With only 80 minutes of drafting practice on Saturday available, we still don’t have a clue as to who will shine.

But, if you look at the speed charts, a few sleepers emerge.

Michael McDowell has been quietly strong. He qualified his No. 34 Ford in 12th for the second race of the 2019 season. That comes after finishing fifth in last Sunday’s Daytona 500. To further that, the Front Row Motorsports driver was fourth in final practice on Saturday afternoon.

When drivers like Kevin Harvick, Brad Keselowski, Joey Logano and Ryan Blaney are struggling, why not take a flier on McDowell?

Austin Dillon has been quick too. Dillon, was third fastest in his No. 3 Chevrolet in both practice sessions around the 1.54-mile Georgia race track this weekend. He also qualified 10th for this weekend’s race too.

With how wide open this weekend is, why couldn’t either shock the NASCAR world by winning on Sunday?
