“We’re Past Champions In My Eyes” Says Logano As He’s Ready To Put 2018 Behind Him

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – It sounds weird, especially in society these days where everyone boasts about themselves, but Joey Logano is ready to put last season’s championship run behind him.

Yes, Logano isn’t wanting to live in the past. He says 2018 is over and it’s now time to focus on repeating in 2019. If he wants to live and boast about past success, then future success won’t come.

“That was last year,” Logano said ahead of the 2019 season opener at Daytona. “One of my favorite Roger Penske quotes is ‘Don’t trip over your press clippings.’ That’s last year and we need to keep looking forward because right now, we’re past champions in my eyes.

“As soon as we unloaded down here the championship fun is over and it’s back to trying to win another one. We’re back at zero with everyone else.”

Logano, is trying to become the first reigning Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series champion to win the Daytona 500 the next February since Dale Jarrett did so in 2000. In fact, that feat has only happened five times ever and just twice since 1978.

If anyone is going to do it though, Logano is the one. He has four straight top six finishes in the Daytona 500 to go along with six top five finishes in his last seven restrictor plate starts overall. Going back to his Daytona 500 win in 2015, Logano has nine top two finishes in his last 22 plate starts. That’s a remarkable feat in itself.

Now, Logano is wanting to take take that past success and use his momentum of a championship in 2018 to make it a successful 2019.
