Logano Makes Last Lap Pass To Win Duel No. 2

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Joey Logano showed why he’s the new restrictor plate king in NASCAR. Logano, passed when no one else said you could at Daytona this year and made a phenomenal move on the final lap of Thursday night’s Gander RV Duel No. 2 to win his first 150 mile qualifier race.

It was the second straight year a Team Penske driver won a Duel too.

The second Duel looked a lot like the second one too. From the drop of the green flag, all 21 starters couldn’t get single file and to the high lane quick enough. Then, starting on Lap 11, the pit stops ensued.

That allowed the Fords to get out front and set their sails on another domination.

Clint Bowyer took over the lead on Lap 21 and would lead the next 39 laps. The Stewart Haas Racing driver was in control while he had a Toyota (Denny Hamlin) and three Fords running behind.

Hamlin, couldn’t make a move because he was a lame duck if so. The next best Toyota was running in 20th place. With another SHR car in third and two Penske’s behind Aric Almirola, Hamlin would have no drafting help.

So, the group would just run single file – until the last lap.

Logano, pulled out of line entering Turn 1 and used a quick side draft from Almirola up high and used that momentum to run down the banking to the low side of Turn 1. That gave him enough momentum to pull by Bowyer and clear him exiting Turn 2. He’d remain in the lead for the final two corners and won the second Duel in Daytona.

Ford swept both races on Thursday night after Kevin Harvick dominated the first Duel in leading the final 44 laps. Bowyer, led 41 laps in Duel 2.

Bowyer, would end up finishing second in his No. 14 Ford while Almirola finished third in his No. 10 Ford. Hamlin, lost two spots on the final lap and would finish fourth in his No. 11 Toyota while Kurt Busch rounded out the top five in his No. 1 Chevrolet.

The race would run like the first Duel with the exception of no cautions.
