DAYTONA BEACH, Fla – Kurt Busch is entering what could be his 20th and final season in NASCAR. The newest Chip Ganassi Racing employee has always said that 20 was a good number to call it quits on. While he’s not ruling out a return in 2020, this one year contract could be it for him in terms of full time racing in NASCAR.
He made it clear, he doesn’t necessarily want to be done racing per say, as he has other racing endeavors he wants to try, but this could be it.
If so, a Daytona 500 win on Sunday would be fitting.
Busch, won the race in 2017 in a dramatic last lap finish. He’d love to win again in 2019 with CGR.
In the offseason, Busch left a ride at SHR, one in where he won at least one race in all five years there including coming off of a one of his most consistent years in NASCAR last year, to join a team in taking over a car that hasn’t won a race since 2013.
But, in his first two races in the No. 1 Chevrolet, Busch is quietly shining.
In last Sunday’s Advance Auto Parts Clash, Busch brought his car home runner-up. In Thursday night’s Gander RV Duels in Daytona, he would finish fifth.
That’s two races, two top five finishes.
That’s a great start.
Via his fifth place finish in Thursday’s 150 mile qualifying race, he will start 12th in Sunday’s 61st annual Daytona 500 (2:30 p.m. ET/FOX/MRN/SiriusXM NASCAR Radio). Busch, is typically a very good plate racer. He now has a solid car.
If he can avoid the carnage, he’s the one to watch.
