Only three manufacturers have as many Rolex 24 Hours of Daytona victories as BMW. On Sunday, they earned their fourth ever, trailing only Porsche (22), Ford (7) and Ferrari (5) on the all-time wins list.
Augusto Farfus, passed the Risi Competizione Ferrari being driven by James Caldo late in the race and never looked back with the red flag being displayed while Farfus’ No. 25 BMW Team RLL was leading. With the race never resuming, RLL was credited with the win as Farfus, Conor De Phillippi, Philipp Eng and Conor Herta were celebrating.
For RLL, it’s a great victory and gives IndyCar some momentum as the full time NTT IndyCar Series team gets a new watch as does Herta, the second generation driver who will be competing for Harding Steinbrenner Racing in the series as a rookie in 2019 too.
The way they won though was luck.
Towards the end, six of the nine cars in this class were still on the lead lap. But, on a late race restart, two of the leaders crashed into one another with Frederic Makowiecki and his Porsche getting into Joey Hand’s Chip Ganassi racing Ford.
Both were eliminated.
Then, right before the red flag came out, the No. 67 CGR Ford had to pit for a driver change and fuel as they ran out. Richard Westbrook, Scott Dixon and Ryan Briscoe went from first to third.
That left the Ferrari and BMW going for the win in which the BMW had the speed and control to win.
In the GT Daytona class, Grasser Racing won for a second straight year with Rolf Ineichen, Mirko Bortolotti, Christian Engelhard and Rick Breukers winning a crazy race in their No. 11 Lamborghini.
Daniel Morad, Christopher Mies, Dries Vanthoor and Ricky Feller finished runner-up in the No. 29 Audi while the No. 12 Lexus driven by Frankie Montechalvo, Townsend Bell, Aaron Telitz and Jeff Segal rounded out the podium in third.
In the four car ORECA class, Dragon Speed’s No. 18 entry driven by Pastor Maldonado, Roberto Gonzalez, Ryan Cullen and Sebastian Saavedra were victorious. The car went off course a couple of times in the wet but were still able maintain their top spot.
In all, Alonso, Herta, RLL and Dragon Speed all had entries in this race as well as in IndyCar this season and all leave Daytona with some new jewelry.
